Larks defeat Willand Rovers

The Larks shook off their recent disappointing results to mark their first ever Southern League encounter with old Western League rivals Willand Rovers with a win.

The Larks started brightly, playing some attractive possession football, and swiftly won a corner, which was taken as usual by Dale Evans. Centre-half and captain Mike Baker was the first to get to the ball and he headed it home for his first goal of the season (see photo). As the Larks continued to put pressure on the visitors he nearly made it two from close range.

Our top scorer Lewis Powell made it 2-0 with a fine individual effort, beating at least three Willand defenders to coolly slot home from the edge of the box.

Just before the break Willand’s veteran forward Craig Veal was the first to react when the ball was spilled in our area, narrowing the lead to 2-1.

But although the second half was a scrappier affair, it was the home side who grabbed the decisive goal when Alex Lambert took advantage of his speed, created some space, and as if in slow motion fired past Mike Searle to put the game beyond Willand’s reach.

Next up for the Larks is a home tie against Street in the Somerset Premier Cup on Wednesday 9th October, ko 7.45pm. Entry is only £6/£4 concessions.
